The pious mother of Tibet is Tara, a female counterpart of Chenrizig (Avelokitesvara.) Her name means “star” or “constellation.” she gently steers worshipers through the alarming sea of adversity. According to legend, Tara was born from a tear shed by Chenrizig at his inefficiency to free the afflicted. It is she who instilled in him the courage to deliver them. A couple of 17th century Tibetan sculptures portray two aspects of this goddess. The first sculpture of Tara with a sparkling silver body and gold embellishments is Indo- Nepalese in style. She has an eye on her forehead and on each of her palms to signify that she can see misery anywhere. Her peaceful demeanor reassures her worshipers that their prayers will be answered.
